Families will take to Bandy Creek for a free fishing and safety day on January 12.

Families can learn how to use life jackets, join a casting competition and rubbish collecting competition.

The annual event is hosted by the Esperance Deep Sea Angling Club and Recfish West.

All are welcome and children must be supervised by an adult to participate and register for a chance to win prizes.

South East Coast Recreational Fishing Council president and Esperance Deep Sea Angling Club member Graham Cooper said the event drew more than 100 participants last year.

"We want to teach safety to children out on the rocks and to learn about fishing. We have some great prizes for every type of fish that you can catch," he said.

Registrations are open from 8.30am to 11am, activities from 9am to 4pm, followed by presentations.

The event will be held at the club on Dawe Drive in Bandy Creek.
