Esperance Junior Volunteer Fire Brigade on track for zone championships

About 100 junior firefighters competed at the Goldfields Zone of the Junior Volunteer Fire Brigades competition held in Kalgoorlie on November, 2.

Brigades from Southern Cross, Coolgardie, South Kalgoorlie, North Kalgoorlie, Kambalda and Esperance took to the track to compete in a range of challenges.

The ten event program was hotly contested over the five hour competition which was held in beautiful conditions on the Kalgoorlie running track.

Overall winning Brigade was Esperance with 94 points, Coolgardie finished second with 85 points, North Kalgoorlie finished with 68 points and Kambalda with 60 points rounding out a very close competition across the board.

Esperance 1 took out the Junior Brigade win with 56 points, with Kalgoorlie/Kambalda combined team finishing second with 41 points and Coolgardie at third with 36 points.

The winning Sub Junior team was Coolgardie 1 with 49 points, beating Kambalda 2 with 41 points and Esperance 1 with 38 points.

Champion Junior Fireman was Aden Close from Esperance with nine points closely followed by Chayce Pearce from Southern Cross with eight points and Tyler Andrews from Kambalda with seven points.

Champion Sub Junior Fireman was Josh Campbell from North Kalgoorlie with 12 points followed by Steven Wanoe-Katene from Kambalda with nine points.

The Brigades meet again in Kambalda on Sunday, November 17, to decide the Goldfields Zone Champion Brigade for 2019.

The winning Brigade will then head to the Junior Volunteer Fire Brigade WA State Championships to be held in Fremantle on November 30 and December 1, 2019.

Esperance coaches Harry Moir and Brian Willoughby said they look forward to a strong performance from the brigade at the zone championships.
