The team at the Shire of Esperance's Wylie Bay Waste Facility has secured this month's Esperance Chamber of Commerce and Industry Customer Service Award.
The award was presented to team members by Chamber executive officer Bronwyn McLeod on Tuesday, September 10.
The hard-working team includes 10 staff, tasked with sorting the recyclables and baling the product for market at the facility's materials recovery shed.
Having spent two years working at the facility, Waste Management supervisor Zoe Sheffield-Van Mierlo said she enjoyed the physical component of the job and having a positive impact managing waste for the community.
"Part of my role is to supervise the site, the materials recovery shed, and accept the waste from the community," she said.
"There is a very physical component to the job but it's good to get amongst it.
"We get the opportunity to work outside some days, too.
"It's great to have a positive role in waste management for the Shire of Esperance.
"For me personally, it's a really important job and I enjoy it and I know the team feels the same way."
Ms Sheffield-Van Mierlo said the team did their best for the community, with the shared goal of diverting as much waste as possible from landfill.
The team move as many as 40 large bales each week, as well as separating scrap metal, construction and demolition waste and green waste.
Both Ms Sheffield-Van Mierlo and dedicated members of her team agreed that it was wonderful to be recognised for their service to the community.
"It feels really great," she said.
"It's wonderful to be recognised for our customer service that we give the community and the effort that we put in here.
"I would like to thank the person who nominated us for the recognition.
"We do our best for the community because, ultimately, we want to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
"That means putting in the work and doing our best every day."
As a recipient of the monthly award, the team will now go into the running to win the Chamber's Customer Service of the Year Award.
