Esperance Netball Association hosts inaugural NAIDOC round
The Esperance Netball Association has hosted its inaugural NAIDOC round on Saturday, June 15.
The round comes ahead of NAIDOC Week, from July 7 until July 14, which recognises the history, culture, achievements and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The event was financially supported by CBH Group, who awarded the association a $1000 grant through its Grass Roots Fund to help support the purchase of NAIDOC goal protectors and prizes for the best on ground.
The entry to the Esperance Indoor Sports Stadium featured local indigenous art works, with attendees lining up for traditional Aboriginal body art.
The event was attended by the Esperance Girls Academy, who performed 'Wanjoo' The Welcome Song after member Nicolie Thomas presented an Acknowledgement to Country.
Association president Fiona McDonald said she was thrilled with the turnout for the event and said the association hoped to run the NAIDOC round annually in the future.
"We're absolutely excited about it," she said.
"We're so happy to have everyone here to celebrate this momentous occasion with us."
Mrs McDonald extended thanks to the Girls Academy, the Diamonds Netball Team, Julie Hawke and Anna Bonney, the Little Yorgas from Nulsen Primary School, Sonia Major and the United Netball Club for helping to organise the event alongside Esperance Netball Association.
