Dome Café Esperance staff member Stacey Patterson has taken out the Esperance Chamber of Commerce and Industry's customer service of the month award for May.
The 17-year-old, who began working at the café in February last year, was nominated for providing great service and for standing out.
Although the award came as a surprise, Miss Patterson said she was proud of herself and how far she'd come because she knew she gave 100 per cent to the job every day.
"I applied [at Dome Esperance] because I wanted to work here and now I love it," she said.
"I've been working on the till since I began working here and now I'm working on coffees - I never thought I'd be able to do that. I'm very happy with myself and how far I've come.
"It can be busy, and there can be ups and downs, but you just keep smiling and give everyone a positive experience.
"I was able to come out of my shell because I just love it here so much and I've learnt a lot, too."
Shauna Parsons, who has owned the business for more than seven years, said she admired the work ethic Miss Patterson had demonstrated and that she was a real example to other young employees.
"Stacey joined us in February last year and she came very quietly but I've watched her confidence grow and it's been tremendous," she said.
"We've taken her under our wing and she's just been a star. It's been heartening to see that progress.
"As you can appreciate, we have a lot of people [staff] coming through and, unfortunately, not all of them have the same work ethos as Stacey has shown.
"I think it's really admirable and a real example to other kids. We're really proud of her.
"It's amazing because I remember contacting Stacey's mother within only a few weeks of her working here and congratulating her on the way that she has raised her.
"It was coming through in her personality and her manners, all of the things you would like to see in your own kids, and I respect that tremendously."
Having taken on a number of different duties in her short time with the business, Mrs Parsons said was confident Miss Patterson was capable of stepping into a managerial role when the time was right.
"Any challenge they put to her, she accepts," she said.
"I've told her many times that she could be a supervisor within a short period of time or even manager down the track - she has that ability.
"That's what I want to instil in Stacey, that she does have the capability of doing it.
"She gets on incredibly well with our guests, she makes everyone feel welcome and she's incredibly polite and respectful.
"Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if you [the Esperance Chamber of Commerce and Industry] had numerous nominations for Stacey because we get amazing comments all of the time."
Miss Patterson extended thanks to the customer that nominated her, as well as the business, its staff and customers for having made coming to work such an enjoyable experience.
As a recipient of the monthly award, Miss Patterson will now go into the running to win the Chamber's Customer Service of the Year Award.
