Activ Esperance nominated at Disability Support Awards

Activ Esperance was nominated for two awards at the WA Disability Support Awards.

The team was nominated by families of people with disabilities that the organisation supports.

Activ Esperance Community team members Lynda Paxton, Natalie Green, Joy Makhin and Nicole Anderson were nominated for improving the quality of life of an elderly customer who faced health issues.

This included engaging the customer in the community, helping her to participate in nursing home activities and visiting her in hospital last year.

Activ Esperance Accommodation team members Lynda Paxton, Dee Bruce, Aimee Svensson, Joy Makhin Natalie Green, Cody Ferrier and Deborah Warren were nominated for improving the living situation of high-need and non-verbal men at Read House.

The team was nominated for their work in creating a welcoming home environment and helping to empower the men to lead increasing independent lives.

The Read House staff provide 24-hour support and have also ensured those who live at the house are engaged in the Esperance community.

Activ Esperance customer operations manager Lynda Paxton said being nominated by local families for the awards, made the staff feel recognised for all their hard work over the past year.

"The way disability services are provided is changing at the moment with the National Disability Insurance Scheme," she said.

"I think to be recognised for the fact we've moved such a long way as a team, and are providing some really valued services, has given the team that confidence and motivation to move forward and to keep going."

Mrs Paxton said dealing with changes in the disability sector was challenging, but the support from families had given the team a confidence boost.

The awards night was inspirational for the local team and has given Activ Esperance fresh ideas.

"Hearing the stories and the reason the winners received the awards blew everybody away," Mrs Paxton said.

"The selflessness and the dedication that disability support organisations show is incredible."

The 2019 awards were held on Saturday, May 11 at Crown Perth.
