Making headlines in April 2009 was then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's visit to Esperance.

The Labor prime minister helped launch a new dining and catering room at the Teen Challenge Grace Academy.

The academy is a rehabilitation facility that is located on a 250-acre property in Gibson.

Other news included a 'bedroom invasion'.

An Esperance nurse woke up in the early hours of the morning to find a strange man in her room demanding money.

The intruder fled before police arrived.
