Alleged 1998 Esperance rape charge

Cold Case Serious Crime Squad detectives arrested a 42-year-old man from West Beach on April 17, 2019, following an investigation into an alleged historic sexual assault in Esperance in 1998.

On Friday, March 27, 1998, a woman in her 20s was at a hotel on The Esplanade.

Just after midnight, she left and started walking to her accommodation.

Detectives allege a car pulled up alongside her and the two people in the car offered her a lift to her home and she accepted.

She was allegedly driven to a secluded location off Twilight Beach Road when the driver dragged her from the car and physically assaulted her.

It is further alleged he dragged her into nearby bushes and sexually assaulted her.

In 2019, Cold Case detectives re-re-opened the case, leading to the man being identified and apprehended.

The man has been charged with aggravated sexual penetration without consent; and deprivation of liberty.

He is due to appear before Esperance Courthouse on May 7.
