Esperance Bay Yacht Club hosts state championship

The Esperance Bay Yacht Club hosted their biggest event of the year, with two days full of action-packed sailing at the 2019 Flying Fifteen WA State Championships.

The Easter Regatta event was held at the Esperance Bay on Saturday and Sunday, April 20 and 21.

Esperance Bay Yacht Club Regatta chairman and vice commodore David Swan said racing was abandoned on Good Friday because the winds were blowing at more than 30 knots and posed a danger to the yachts.

Mr Swan said the winds were up and down on Saturday, but the weather cleared on Sunday.

The chairman said fleet numbers were "excellent".

Thirty-five yachts competed, with 70 sailors and a total entourage of about 170 people involved.

Mr Swan said competitions was strong, with world and national champions involved in the Easter event.

The Flying Fifteen was won by Nick Jerwood and Brad Sheridan in 'Ineffable'.

The runners up were David Yu and Chris Nelson in 'Tuffan Up'.

Third place went to Geg Leaversuch and Peter Barblett in 'Glamour Boys', with Philippa Packer and Dean McAullay in 'Firefly' in fourth.

The Flying Fifteen is held in Esperance once every four years.
