Making headlines in March 2009, a coronial inquest was held into the deaths of three Esperance men who died in a plane crash in 2007 after their single-engine Piper aircraft crashed into farmland.

Esperance Senior High School celebrated their annual school ball, which saw Casey Blackburn and Thomas Pengilly named Belle and Beau of the ball.

In April 2009, Bunnings Warehouse Esperance officially opened its doors.

Esperance man Luke Christian was named Sports Star of the Week for his efforts in cricket, badminton, mixed netball, golf, Australian Rules Football and swimming.
