Grass Patch take out Mallee Ashes

Grass Patch have taken out the annual Mallee Ashes, with players and spectators raising more than $2000 along the way to support those affected by breast cancer.

The event, established six years ago, was born out of a desire to bring the communities of both Grass Patch and Salmon Gums together.

The decision to fundraise for the charity was a product of that.

The action-packed, family-friendly event sees the teams compete and raise money for The McGrath Foundation, which supports Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia to provide physical, psychological and emotional support to patients.

Event organiser John Sanderson said the $2030 raised for Pink Stumps and Breast Cancer was a great effort for a great cause.

It was Salmon Gums that took out the title last year, sneaking over the line by 87 runs after a hard-fought battle, but Grass Patch managed to reclaim the title for 2019.

The clubs extended thanks to their generous sponsors, including Landmark, SportsPower Esperance, Choices Flooring, Esperance Combined Tyres and Mechanical, Farmers Centre, and Grubs Contract Fencing, and said the day simply wouldn't be possible without them.

The Post Match Report with John Sanderson:

With heavy cloud cover and threatening rain, the two team captains made their way to the pitch for the coin toss.

Grass Patch won the toss, and judging from the greenness of the pitch, sent Salmon Gums in to bat.

The Gums started off with a promising run rate, Digby Graham hammering out 47 runs with the loss of 1 wicket, including 9 boundaries, 4 of those sixes.

Grant Maganotti contributed 18 runs, including 2 sixes, to take Salmon Gums to the total of 81 runs.

Losing 17 wickets in the process.

Helping to keep Salmon Gums to the modest total were Aaron Bald with 3 wickets, Ash Bowman with 3 wickets and Nat Keen with a 4 wicket hall, going for -9 runs.

With light rain falling, Grass Patch opened up the run chase just after lunch.

The innings started with Ash Bowman belting 34 runs with the loss of 1 wicket, hitting 6 boundaries, 4 of those sixes.

And it didn't stop there, with Aaron Bald reaching 29 not out, Murray Bowman 25 not out, Rupert Bouquart 22 with the loss of a wicket and Grub, again top scoring for the Patch with 36 runs not out.

Bravely defending the total were Salmon Gums Captian Brody Starcevich with 2 wickets, giving up 3 runs, Ash Hayden with 2 wickets giving up 1 run, Matt Gordon with 2 wickets giving up 0 runs and Todd Guest with 2 wickets, giving up 3 runs.

Unfortunately for Salmon Gums this was not enough, and Grass Patch went out and around the 81 set, to make a total of 147 runs for the loss of 17 wickets.

Therefore, rightfully in the minds of some, reclaiming the Ashes.

Catch of the day went to Grub, Six of the day went to Grant Maganottin and Man of the Match went to Aaron Bald.

Keep posted for the next instalment of the Mallee Ashes, when Salmon Gums will try to reclaim, and Grass Patch try to hold on to, the most prized trophy in the sporting world.
