Esperance RSL president Shane Miller says the organisation are hurt after thieves stole cash, a cheque book and paperwork from their treasurer's home.
Treasurer Benjamin Roost said his wife returned home on Friday afternoon, March 8, to find their house had been broken into.
“Cash was taken from the house, both personal and for the RSL, as well as the [RSL] cheque book," he said.
“I was pretty devastated and, with my work, I was actually out of town at the time - it was pretty hard and it was a significant amount [of cash].
"This is a charity to help veterans down here, it’s a very bad act to take money from those guys who need it more than most."
Mr Roost published a public address via the Esperance Community Facebook Page immediately after the theft, urging businesses not to take cheques from the organisation as they had been stolen.
Club president Shane Miller said his heart went out to the family for the violation of their privacy and encouraged anyone who may know something to come forward.
"My heart goes out to Ben Roost and his family," he said.
"The thieves stole a considerable amount of money, cheque books and other bits of treasury paperwork.
"This theft has hurt the RSL and it will take us a while to recover.
"I have lived in Esperance for 25 years and I know first hand how fantastic the community is in Esperance.
"You only need to ask for help and it's there."
Mr Roost praised Esperance Police for their prompt response, with an investigation now underway.
The theft came at a difficult time for Esperance Police, with a spate of burglaries over the past week throughout West Beach, Sinclair and Nulsen.
Senior sergeant Steve Thompson said it was an active investigation and encouraged the community to report any suspicious behaviour to police.
Esperance Police have urged anyone with further information they believe may assist in the investigation to contact Esperance Police Station on (08) 9079 8999.
The Esperance Returned and Services League support war veterans and their families, offering them welfare support, advocacy and representation.
