It’s our favourite time of the week – a chance to reflect on the changes in Esperance, the faces and the fun that was being had 10 years ago this week.

The February 2009 edition saw the reopening of the Bay of Isles Leisure Centre grace the front page.

After an eight-month closure, more than 600 people attended the centre's official reopening.

The facility had been closed following a gas explosion at Apache Energy in June, 2008.

Local business and residents dug deep to raise money and donate clothing and goods to victims of the Victorian bushfires - the deadliest bushfire disaster in the nation's history.

The fire, which went on to be called the Black Saturday bushfires, claimed 173 lives and destroyed thousands of homes.

Nine-year-old Mitchell Brice took out the Sports Star of the Week for his efforts in AFL Football, soccer and tee ball.
