Efforts to extricate a wide-load truck, which blocked traffic when it became wedged on a major NSW highway, will continue into the night as a large crane moves into place.
Emergency crews were called to the M1 Pacific Motorway northbound off-ramp to Newcastle Link Road at Cameron Park about 4.30am on Monday after the truck's load shifted and became wedged between barriers.
It's believed the truck was carrying a pressure vessel, which is often used to carry fuel, a Transport Management Centre spokeswoman told AAP.
Motorists travelling to Newcastle continued to be diverted throughout Monday and into the evening as a large crane was transported from Sydney.
The salvage crane is expected to begin the operation to free the truck at 11pm on Monday at which point the freeway's northbound lanes will be shut off.
The salvage operation will continue at least into the early hours of Tuesday.
