Planning for a Book Festival got underway at a Book Talk event hosted at the Esperance Bowling Club on Tuesday, February 5.
Book Talk, an initiative of local book group ‘The Periodicals’, saw strong support from those in attendance.
The group was seeking public feedback on interest in holding a Book Festival in Esperance.
Book Club speaker Julie Starcevich posed the question, “Denmark and Margaret River hold festivals with excellent presenters, why can’t we?”
Mrs Starcevich said Esperance was a fantastic location to invite authors from all over Australia.
“It would also be a great opportunity to showcase local authors,” she said.
Mrs Starcevich said speakers who shared the details of their particular book club would encourage even a determined non-reader to become a 'book clubber'.
“Their sharing of the joy and great friendships that have evolved for as long as three decades for some proved significantly that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword,” she said.
“Book clubs are very often about so much more than just a shared love of the written word.”
Mrs Starcevich said she hoped Esperance could establish a festival within two years and planned to set up another meeting of interested locals in the coming months.
