It’s our favourite time of the week – a chance to reflect on the changes in Esperance, the faces and the fun that was being had 10 years ago this week.

The January 23, 2009, edition covers the shock decision by BHP Billiton to indefinitely suspend its Ravensthorpe Nickel Operations.

At the time, the closure saw at least 1,400 jobs cut as the price and demand for nickel continued to fall.

In other news, athletes were preparing for the annual Australia Day Swim Thru – which was later won by swimmer Josh Ellett in a time of 31 minutes and 39 seconds.

Australia Day in 2009 was a whopping 44.5°C, but that didn’t deter the community from enjoying the Family Fun Day at Adventureland Park.

David Green was awarded the Active Citizen of the Year Award for his contributions to the Esperance Fire and Rescue Service and The Esperance Hockey Association.
