As one season finishes another begins and the focus now turns to the 2019 season at the Pink Lake Golf Club for the Thursday Scroungers stalwarts. The first event of the year was played last week when a stableford game was contested in ideal conditions and it was good to see three visitors join in.
Many good scores were returned but none better than the 40 points carded by Jim Gray who was pleased to cement his name as a qualifier for the 2019 King Scrounger. Jim has become a consistent performer in recent years and seemed to relish the opportunity to hitch a ride in a cart as he played his way to victory. One stroke behind in second place was Esa Jaarola who put aside his new set of clubs and returned to his trusty old set and rediscovered the magic when he shot 39 points to be an unlucky second. Esa has been a noticeable absentee in recent months as he has attended to personal matters, but showed he has lost little during the break and looks set for a good season ahead.
The Tommy went to Peter Warr who carded a frugal 22 but took home a small token of acknowledgment for his effort. Other prize winners were Ian Riding, Jim Hutch, Hook Hocking, Chris Stokes, Ian Mumme, Esa and Jim Gray while the birdie nest was raided by Cliff Spencer, Ian Mumme and Riding. The best veteran score was returned by the improving Geoff Poole with 37 points.
Next week’s event will be a stableford sponsored by the Castletown IGA Express; visitors are welcome. Remember the new rules are in effect as of January 1; and 2019 subs are due for payment.
