Esperance taxi assault sees offender receive a suspended term of imprisonment

A 30 year-old Kalgoorlie man was given a seven-month suspended prison sentence after he assaulted an elderly taxi driver in Esperance. 

Clayton Peihana Chambers White appeared before Magistrate Sandra De Maio on November 7 in Kalgoorlie Courthouse charged with assaulting the driver of a taxi.

White had pleaded guilty to assaulting the 70 year-old driver on August 23 and had been remanded in custody for sentencing.

He assaulted the driver on Andrew Street in Esperance on Sunday, July 29 about 12:12am.

The driver was punched in the face causing injury and bruising to his face and arm, as well as damage to his glasses.

White was charged by Esperance Police on August 8.

The sentence was suspended for nine months starting November 7.

Following the assault, the driver told the Express it was the second time he had been assaulted at work.
