Goldfields Individual and Family Support Association (GIFSA) has appointed an expert in disability to guide locals through the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
The Esperance region will begin transferring to the federal NDIS on October 1.
Jo Russell has been appointed as an ‘NDIS engagement officer’ by the organisation.
Ms Russell has three children, two of which have autism.
“I’ve been involved with the disabilities sector for about 25 years now,” she said.
“Because disability directly affects my children it remains an area that I'm passionate about.”
Ms Russell has been hired on an 18 month contract, funded under the Information, Linkage and Capacity Building initiative.
“As the scheme rolls out there's a great deal of uncertainty and confusion surrounding the NDIS and what it will mean for those affected by the scheme,” she said.
“So my role is assist people with disabilities, their families and cares, to gain knowledge information and find pathways to access the NDIS.
“I’ll be conducting three NDIS workshops in Esperance.”
Ms Russell said the workshops would help alleviate fears people had regarding the NDIS roll-out.
