Opening term play put Lions in good stead
Newtown Condingup took advantage of strong winds in the opening term against Ports kicking six goals to one before the rain set in.
The day had strong winds, horizontal rain and hail, making for an interesting match.
Newtown Condingup’s opening goal saw Nigel Johnson kick from a behind only to see the ball blow back and hit the behind post for an out on the full free kick to Jacob Debeer.
He kicked the ball to the middle of the goal square before the wind turned the ball at right angles and through the big sticks. Brayden Barker and Elijah Edwards were also devastating early and scored two goals apiece.
Rory Grundy was working hard in the conditions for Ports and was able to score a goal into the wind and had great support from Isaac Puna and Harvey Bishop.
After the opening term the wet and cold conditions set in and the game developed into a battle for yardage in which both defences were on top. Dane Holdman had another good game but did not have things all his way as Liam Creedon matched him in marking contests around the ground and was strong at bounce downs which were plentiful.
Newtown Condingup kicked four more goals in the last three quarters and had good performances from Jack Adams and Zac Murray down back and Shaun Mayfield broke through for his first A grade goal late in the match.
