Goldfields Radio Controlled Model Car Club host Cup

The Goldfields Radio Controlled Model Car Club hosted round 2 of the prestigious 5 round WA Challenge cup series in Kalgoorlie and 3 local members of the Esperance Bay RC Car Club made the trip to represent the local club at the 2 day event.

After 5 long rounds of qualifying on Saturday in the premier nitro buggy class Pat MacAleese came out 20th overall in a huge field filled with WA's best talent, showing plenty of speed but suffering several crashes which hurt his chances of qualifying higher.

MacAleese also contested the EP8 electric powered buggy class and had a strong showing with fellow Esperance driver Kane Holt, both managing to run several top 3 finishes and lead races throughout qualifying in what was the tightest competition they'd ever experienced against some high level Perth drivers, with the top 5 in the class all capable of race wins - by qualifying end MacAleese was 3rd and Holt 2nd which was a great result against tough competition.

Casey Winfield made the most of his first ever entry in a state level event gaining experience and speed to qualify 11th.

Finals were run on Sunday and in his initial 20 minute nitro buggy final MacAleese put in the drive of his life to be over a lap up on the field but an unlucky mechanical failure at the 12 minute mark put paid to his chances of progressing further through the nitro finals format disappointingly.

The EP8 buggy finals were run over a 3 race format with the best 2 results and fastest race times being counted.

The racing continued to be just as close as Saturday's qualifying with the Esperance drivers battling each other and the Perth drivers every race with Holt claiming a 2nd, 1st and 3rd, MacAleese a 3rd, mechanical DNF and 4th.

By the end of the day Holt made the podium with 3rd overall just missing out on 2nd by 7/10th's of a second! MacAleese took a solid 4th and Casey Winfield 11th overall.

The Esperance Bay RC Car Club members would like to thank the Goldfields club for their hospitality and hosting an awesome event, the next local race is championship round 5 Sunday July 22nd.
