The Esperance Unofficial Swimming Competition will be held on June 3 at the Bay of Isles Leisure Centre.
The event is hosted by Esperance Anglican Community School Year 9 student Maddie McGrinder.
The competition consists of six age divisions and an open race with presentations held at Ports Football Club and a free sausage sizzle for competitors.
The competition starts at 9:30am and finishes at 4:00pm, with entry into the Leisure Centre free for everyone.
There is a nominating fee of $2 per race, with cash prizes for each age group winner.
Nominations are available from the Leisure Centre, Esperance Anglican Community School or Dempster Sports and must be submitted by Sunday, May 27.
The Unofficial Swimming competition is Maddie’s ‘Big Picture’ project, which is a course offered at Esperance Anglican School where student’s learning in core subjects is framed around their passion.
“One of my big passions is swimming and my teacher thought it would be appropriate to do my Big Picture project on event planning, which incorporated this competition,” she said.
Maddie said she was hosting an unofficial contest because Esperance did not have the facilities for an official competition, but the event would give locals the experience of a competition without having to travel.
The event is supported by the Esperance Amateur Swim Club, the Shire of Esperance, Bay of Isles Leisure Centre and local businesses.
