Esperance Athletes take to the track

Twins Monique and Sophie Walker have completed another successful state Little Athletics competition, with both qualifying in the Track and Field Championship among around 1,700 athletes.

The pair attended the Championships in Perth from March 2 to 4, competing in four track events including the 100 metre, 200 metre, 400 metre and 800 metre.

Both qualified for the finals in a number of events and, at just 2.36 seconds outside the state record, Sophie came away with a bronze medal in the 400 metre Under 9s competition.

This is the second competition the pair have attended, following a successful time at the annual Country Championships in Bunbury on January 26.

As well as attending their regular weekly training sessions, the pair said they did a series of stretches and running exercises to prepare for the event.

Despite the preparations, Sophie said she felt even more nervous than at the previous Country Week competition.

“I felt more scared because obviously there were going to be faster girls in Perth and it was the first time competing in the 800 [metre],” she said.

“I didn’t feel as nervous for the other races.”

Sophie said she remembered seeing a shadow during the 400 metre race, pushing her to finish in third place and gain the bronze medal.

“I was coming third place and I could see a shadow behind me and I began running as hard as I could because I thought she would overtake me,” she said.

“I ended up being 6 metres in front of the other girl.”

The 100 metre heats saw Sophie qualify for the final amongst 24 other competitors, with both Sophie and Monique qualifying for the final of the 200 metre race.

Despite it being the first time the pair had competed in the 800 metre race, Sophie came 7th and Monique came 8th among 16 competitors.

The pair said they are both looking forward to the next Bunbury competition in November this year.
