STATE Basketball League club Goldfields Giants will be visiting Esperance next weekend for a pre-season camp.

The Goldfields Giants have gone through a major transformation during the off season with former Geraldton Buccaneers coach Scott Rubery appointed as head coach and three big names in United States imports Jeylyn Sharpe (Oklahoma) and Kyle Sovine (Indiana) plus dual citizen Jake Martin recruited for the 2018 season.

Current players Miles Tierney, Daniel Forlano, Jerome Reid, Kosta Stojanovski, Nathan Vince, Justyn Beattie, Maui Dela Cruz, Dion Gulley, Riley Duncan and Lochy Crombie have been in pre-season training since December.

Talented Queenslander Brandon Holloway returned to the Giants in January with the three big recruits arriving early February in time for the Esperance visit.

It’s an exciting time for the SBL club which has grown from one team to three in two years, with the introduction of the Men’s Division One competition in 2017 and a team joining the Women’s competition in 2018.

In another big move, mining giant Northern Star Resources have come on board as major sponsors for the next three seasons.

The State Basketball League consists of 14 teams – nine Perth based, plus Mandurah, Rockingham, Geraldton, Bunbury and Kalgoorlie.

The 2018 season commences with the Pre-Season Blitz in Perth on the March long weekend.

The official home and away fixtures get under way with a double-header on the road for the Giants against Rockingham Flames on Saturday, March 17 and Stirling Senators on Sunday, March 18.

The Giants then get to play at home against the Cougars on Saturday, March 24. For the full official fixtures go to sbl.asn.au.

The boys will take advantage of the beautiful Esperance beaches for their final workout after the stadium session, which is sure to be a treat for the American imports.
