Esperance cricket report

ROUND nine of the Landmark Shield saw only one match played prior to the Christmas break, Esperance versus Coastal Warriors in the Michael Baines Memorial Shield.

Playing at the Esperance Cricket Ground, Coastal Warriors won the toss and elected to bat first.

Opening the bowling on the day it was the youngster Liam Baines who drew first blood claiming the wicket of Coastal veteran Brendon Tyrrell (10) with the score at 26 in the 10th over.

Wickets continued to tumble at a steady rate as the Coastal’s batsmen found it hard to build on any steady partnerships.

Matt Horley (13) and Adam Edwards (42) built a 40-run stint for the fourth wicket.

Stodgy opener David Morris (27) tried hard during the early overs.

Brendan Weckert (18) along with Nahian Biswas (17) had a small 22-run stint for the seventh wicket.

Although the Esperance bowlers continued to take wickets, they just couldn't quite take that 10th wicket as Coastals managed to see out their allotted overs with the score at nine for 162.

For Esperance, Jones, Ayers, O'Neill and Bracken all took a wicket each, but it was young Liam Baines (3/22) and brother Martin Sullivan (2/13) claiming bowling honours.

Esperance began their innings in reverse contrast to Coastals as openers Trevor Ayers (36) and the in-form Matty Harding (18) built up a 54-run partnership for the first wicket.

With Harding out and Ayers losing his wicket at two for 82, Martin Sullivan (48) and Shane Manser (9) took to the Coastal bowlers for a 51-run stand for the third wicket, Sullivan finally losing his wicket at three for 133.

With 163 runs the total for victory and Esperance losing a couple of cheap wickets, things may have swung back into Coastals favor, but the talents of young due Tom Callow (17 not out) and Cammy Irvin (10 not out) corrected Esperance’s short fall.

This saw them over the line in the 38th over for a deserved five-wicket win.

For Coastal Warriors, Adam Edwards (2/15) and Ashley Weckert (2/21) claimed bowling honours.

A reminder to all registered players that Senior Country Week will be held at the WACA from January 21 – 26.
