Esperance-Goldfields Surf Life Saving Club have been commended by the community for their response to a shark sighting during their first patrol of the season.
The three metre Great White shark was spotted 200 metres offshore at Dolphin Cove by patrol members at around 2pm on Sunday, December 2.
Club president Tracey Lewis said all those involved followed standard operations and procedures, with the relevant authorities notified.
“We’ve received really positive feedback from the community regarding how it was dealt with and everything ran really smoothly,” she said.
“I believe there was only one person in the water at the time.”
The beach was closed following the sighting.
The Surf Life Saving Club’s beach patrols will run on Sundays and public holidays for the duration of the season, from December until the end of March.
The public are encouraged to remain informed via the sharksmart website and to report any shark sightings to Water Police on 9442 8600.
