Concerns decomposing whale carcass at Alexander Point could attract sharks

Shark advice has been issued by authorities after a whale carcass was reported at Alexander Point east of Duke of Orleans Bay.

The 10-12 metre carcass was reported by the Esperance Volunteer Marine Rescue to fisheries officers in Esperance Sunday morning.

There are concerns the decomposing carcass could bring sharks close to shore along this stretch of coast.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development have advised the public to exercise additional caution in the Alexander point area and stay informed of the latest detection and sightings.

Fisheries officers will travel to the area to further assess the situation and provide advice to relevant authorities.

The public are encouraged to report any shark sightings to Water Police on 9442 8600.
