While the weather is getting cooler, the arts community has not stopped putting on events. May offered some great arts opportunities including the talented Kasey Chambers and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow. Local theatre group, the ‘Super Troupers’ under the direction of Sally Ashbil also delighted audiences. If you would like to know more about the Super Troupers contact SRC President Ellen Saltmarsh through the Senior Citizens Centre. The Act-Belong-Commit ‘Swing Dance Classes’ with Jake Meadley have got people excited about the upcoming ‘Swing Dance Ball’ coming up on June 10 at the Esperance Civic Centre. Last minute preparations are underway. The event will also include local band ‘Soul’d Out’. With the closure of Taylors Beach Bar, Esperance Community Arts would like to acknowledge the work of Jody Smith and her team for supporting local musicians over a number of years. We wish Jody success in her next venture. Kyron Smithson, who continues to be a powerhouse in organising opportunities for local musicians, also needs to be acknowledged for helping to grow the strong and thriving industry that we all enjoy. Funding success is always welcome with Esperance Community Arts securing $37,000 of Healthway sponsorship to promote the ‘Act, Belong, Commit’ message through partnerships with ‘No Lights No Lycra’ Dance Group; Esperance Drumming Group, Nulsen Primary School and Recherche Writers Group. Esperance Community Arts has also secured $12,000 through the Regional Arts Legacy Fund for strategic planning and marketing, and a Federal Government Volunteer Grant of $2,429 from the Department of Social Services for computer equipment. Other events coming up include the 2017 Esperance Music Festival in August and entries are now open. Re-live the Mandaboornap Dreaming Puppet performance at the Fenwick Cinema on Tuesday June 20 at 6pm and come along to the Cannery Arts Centre on Saturday June 24 for the CD launch of 'Songs from the Southern Edge', by Esperance musicians.
