THE last of the Friday twilight meetings was held on February 3. Veteran trainer ‘Fredo’ Brown dominated the meeting with a winning treble, Hey Bro, Lets Go Macca and Rhino Buster. Spy believes Fredo’s secret is the import of Goldfields water, which is helping his horses. Fredo had a double last meeting and a treble this meeting so his horses are really firing at the moment.
Jockeys Craig Staples and Daniel Staeck continue their fine form with each jockey riding a double. Punters, you know who to follow to pick winners at future meetings.
Last year Esperance Cup winner, Cut Snake snuck under the radar with a strong win at his first start at the track this season. Good to see you back Brendon.
Race 1: Hey Bro (D. Staeck) ran up to his great first up run by leading all the way to win the first race on the program from Terrorize (R. Hill) with Haul In (N. Faithfull) running on nicely for third.
Race 2: With a barn storming finish Heaven’s Gate (L. Staples) came from near last on the home turn to narrowly defeat Pivarnick (D. Staeck) and Cash Machine (R. Hill) who had looked the winner.
Race 3: Happy Harry (C. Staples) continued his good form by easily accounting for Fleeting Romance (R. Tan) and Deidre (A. Carmichael-Hillan) running a nice first up run for third.
Race 4: In one of the lead up races for the Esperance Cup, Cut Snake aided by a brilliant ride from Ryan Hill, finished strongly along the inside to defeat Ultimate Success (F. Kersley) and Black Moment (S. Meeres).
Race 5: Lets Go Macca (C. Staples) came with a strong finishing run to defeat the pacemaker Penthouse Pet (S. Meeres) with the well backed Fiery Combat (D. Staeck) battling on for third position.
Race 6: Form horses Rhino Buster (D. Staeck) and Poets Prince (R. Tan) fought out the finish with Rhino just winning in the end. Third position went to Any Given Time (A. Carmichael-Hillan).
Congratulations to Michael (Pancho) Harding in being named Citizen of the Year. Michael is a Life Member of the EBTC and has been involved in the racing industry for a number of years and through his business has helped the club on many occasions.
The Spy would like to thank the visiting trainers Jane Hossell, Dennis Couper, Bruce Hyde, Frank Maynard, Robbie Payton and Darren Pateman, as well as Kalgoorlie trainers Peter Fernie, Brett Mathews, Neil Dellar, Ross Craig and Craig Wright for their continued support during the season. Your teams of horses have made the races more competitive which is a huge benefit to racing.
Finally, mark this date on your calendar: Sunday, March 5. This is the Esperance Cup, our local Melbourne Cup. Last year there were nearly 2000 people in attendance so let’s make it even bigger and better this year. All you guys and gals start getting your outfits ready for one of the biggest social events in Esperance. For the gals there are Fashions on the Field with great prizes to be won. Come along and enjoy a great day.
Next meeting is Saturday, February 11.
