The Department of Transport concerned about risk posed by Jetty timbers

The Department of Transport has put a ban on swimmers and boat users within 50 metres of the Esperance Tanker Jetty following concerns about the Jetty’s condition.

The ban includes the closure of the nearby water ski area and people are encouraged to use Woody Lake as an alternative.

The Department’s manager of navigational safety and moorings Mark Briant said the jetty debris posed a serious threat to safety.

Mr Briant said there had been confirmed instances where jetty timbers had been retrieved from the bays adjacent the structure.

"It’s understood the closure will impact on the local boating community,” he said.

“However, a collision between a vessel and floating debris may have tragic consequences.”

The Department of Transport will continue to monitor the situation and will reopen the closed waters and ski area once satisfied the risk posed by timbers has been removed.
