Esperance Senior High School’s year nine to 10 girls football team won big late last week, going undefeated in all three games at the Freo Dockers girls football lightning carnival.
The school’s physical education and health teacher Lydia Ryan said the team won by a landslide in the grand final, beating John Paul College 40 – 15.
Ms Ryan said the players, who won all three round-robin games against John Paul College, Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School, and Esperance Anglican Community School, were shocked by the big win.
“The girls were pretty shocked by the overwhelming win I think, we have lost to [John Paul College] for at least the last five years because they’ve got a really strong team,” she said.
“The girls trained really hard, and have done so for about 10 weeks beforehand, so we knew we could do it but they were still surprised we pulled off such a big win.”
Ms Ryan said she was proud of how well the team managed to pull together and play well together.
“The other coach and I were trying to pick the best on ground and we just couldn’t, it was the whole team giving awesome kicking, great tackles and ball control,” she said.
“With the addition of the women’s footy team in Esperance, a lot of our girls have been playing through that as well and it’s starting to get a fair bit of interest in the town too."
