Labor's Member for the Agricultural Region Darren West comments on Esperance projects

It is pleasing to see that the Nationals leader has finally discovered Esperance and learned of the backlog of projects in the town.

(WA Nationals leader Mia Davies slams McGowan government ahead of Esperance State Conference, Esperance Express 9/8/17).

It’s such a shame that she was unaware of these projects as a Cabinet Minister in the Barnett Liberal/National Government.

As the Member rightfully points out, buildings at Esperance TAFE are the State’s worst, the sports centre is riddled with asbestos and the jetty is falling into the sea.

This begs the question, “Why didn’t the Barnett Liberal/National Government invest in these important projects during their eight years in government?”

The member also said that her Government had “committed” to these projects but a search of the 2016/17 Budget Forward Estimates and the Mid-Year Review in December 2016 failed to unearth any funding allocations.

Surely, she realises that it is not possible to deliver these projects without State Government funding?

In what is now a case of “do as I say but not as I do” the member is “slamming” the McGowan Government for its decision to review all R4R projects.

With no allocations to begin with, Esperance can only benefit from such a review.

I will be working with the Esperance community to progress these and other important local projects rather than playing petty politics.
