Esperance Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service Competition team travelled to Bunbury over the long weekend to compete in the 2017 Alcoa State Open Volunteer Fire brigade Championships.
Nineteen brigades competed in two classes, open and C class.
Esperance was in C class in a keenly fought battle that saw the lead change a number of times during the two days, with only five points separating first and third in the end.
Bunbury Brigade won the C class division with 31 points, followed by Northam Brigade on 28 points and Esperance Brigade came in third on 26.
Esperance runner Lieon Kiripatea won the One Man Y event and was selected in the prestigious composite team of eight members to represent the state.
Mandurah Brigade won the open class with 79pts, followed by Bassendean Brigade on 54 points and Harvey Brigade with 35 points.
Coaches Harry Moir and Brian Willoughby were extremely pleased with the team’s performance considering there were a number of new events which they had limited or no training in.
The brigade now looks forward to some hard training to prepare for the Goldfields Zone Championships in Kambalda on April 2, followed by the Annual State Championships in Fremantle, April 26-27.
