THERE was a good contingent of runners and walkers at last Saturday's South East Runners event, which was held along the foreshore from the Whale Tail. Conditions were drizzly but nice and cool for competitors. Runners had a choice of two-kilometre, 4km or 8km distances, and walkers had 2km or 4km.
Zoe Maccan put in an impressive effort to take line honours in the 8km run, well ahead of all the senior runners in the field. Richard Brown and Shannan Dixon crossed the line virtually together for second and third, around 2.5 minutes behind Zoe. Sonya Lawry had a great run to win the 4km distance, also with a good time that put her more than five minutes ahead of the rest of the field. Lance Williams finished in second, and Brad Oversby in third place. The first place-getter in the 2km run was Jessie Eltringham, who also led the pack by a good distance. Jack Sharpe was second, and his younger sister Dana was third.
For the walk categories, Josette Bonnet, who is a visitor to the club, did well to finish first in the 2km distance. The second and third places were a close finish between Mel Ammon and Cindy Sharpe. Maureen Dickason was a easy winner in the 4km walk, with the other three competitors finishing within seconds of each other.
Next Saturday's event starts in the car park at West Beach (John St/Twilight Beach Rd intersection). Start time is 4pm, and distances are 2km or 5km. Visitors welcome. Members will accrue points in the club challenge, with prizes for distances completed.
