SUNDAY’S heat did nothing to diminish the level of competition between the five brigades that took part in the first zone picnic competition for the year.
Around 80 juniors and sub-juniors from Coolgardie, Kambalda, North Kalgoorlie, South Kalgoorlie and Esperance took part in Sunday’s event and delivered outstanding results.
Association chairman Trevor Jones applauded the participants on the standard of their competition, their conduct on track and their sportsmanship.
Next weekend, the Esperance brigade will attend the state open championships in Merredin, with an expected number of 24 taking part.
On November 11, Esperance will continue their run at the zone championships in Kambalda, before the final event of the year - the State Championships - held in Fremantle.
Results for the day: Junior wet work - 1st Esperance 1 (92 points), 2nd Esperance 2 (68 points) and 3rd South Kalgoorlie (25 points).
In sub-juniors - 1st Esperance 1 (83 points), 2nd Kambalda 1 (60 points) and 3rd South Kalgoorlie (53 points).
The overall aggregate for the day: 1st Esperance 1 (175 points), 2nd South Kalgoorlie (78 points) and 3rd Esperance 2 (68 points).
Champion sub-junior was Liana cook from Esperance 1, who took home the position 1 point ahead of a brigade member from South Kalgoorlie.
In a turnaround, Nicholas Crane was named junior champion (from Esperance 1) by 2 points from Lieon Kiripatea.
