ESPERANCE residents can now access an after-hours general practioner (GP) helpline for medical advice.
Goldfields-Midwest Medical local senior program manager Eric Noel said a registered nurse would triage callers and if necessary transfer them to a GP.
"The GP assesses their condition, makes a diagnosis and provides medical advice," Mr Noel said.
Mr Noel said that if callers were advised by either the nurse or GP to see a health professional immediately, they would then be referred to the most appropriate face to face after hours service in their area.
"The helpline is intended for people whose health condition cannot wait until regular GP services become available, who cannot see their usual GP out of hours, who do not know where to access after-hours care or who are not sure what they should do," Mr Noel said.
"It is important to note that the helpline is not intended for those suffering from life-threatening conditions.
"If it is an emergency, call 000 for an ambulance immediately."
The helpline is accessible from 6pm to 8am Monday to Saturday, and from noon Saturday to 8am Monday by dialling 1800 022 222.
It is available all day on public holidays.
