Climate sceptic raises the heat in Brisbane

29 Jan, 2010 11:11 AM
Hundreds of Queensland climate change sceptics have gathered at a sold-out luncheon in Brisbane to hear a controversial speech disputing the science.

Guests have paid $130 each to hear British climate sceptic Lord Christopher Monckton, described as "from the fringe" by Australian climate change sceptic Senator Barnaby Joyce.

The controversial Lord Monckton has said he came to Australia to prove Prime Minister Kevin Rudd wrong on climate change.

Two leading Australian climate change sceptics and an environmental journalist, who will offer an opposing view, will also speak.

All guests who spoke to brisbanetimes.com.au on their way into the luncheon, which started at 12 noon at the Hilton Hotel, said they vehemently disagreed that the world was warming.

William Fox said he and his wife Carmel had come to hear Lord Monckton in person, because they believed the Briton was right about climate change.

"We read so much of Lord Monckton and he sounds as though he's done much study on the subject and I thought it would enlighten my wife and I to hear him first-hand and if there's a debate on, we'll enjoy the debate," he said.

"I find [climate change] questionable. I suppose you'd say I'm a sceptic, I'm very careful with it."

Llyn Crawford, from Tarragindi, believed the idea of climate change had been hyped up and she had not seen any change in the weather in 42 years of living in Queensland.

"I read everything I can lay my hands on and I feel the media has exaggerated to a great extent to a point of frightening people," she said.

"There's lots of evidence climate change is cyclical - it's happened in the past.

"I believe whatever we do won't make all that difference to the climate or planet Earth."

Ruth Bennett said she agreed that the public had been led on.

The Canadian migrant, who now lives in Brisbane's CBD, had been devastated by stories such as Peter Spencer's hunger strike.

"I do believe we have scared a whole generation for no good reason," she said.

Malcolm Kirke travelled from Ayr, near Townsville, for the function and expected a lively debate.

"Climate change is happening, global warming isn't," he said.

"As far as I'm concerned, the effect of carbon on the air is virtually nil. The idea of a carbon reduction emissions scheme that Penny Wong talks about is nonsensical, [carbon] is a very important plant food, we can't do without it."

Lord Monckton was brought to Australia by two Sunshine Coast retirees, Case Smit and John Smeed, who have forked out more than $100,000 for the tour, which they hoped to recoup through sales and donations.

Lord Monckton is on a 13 day tour of Australia. Brisbane Sydney and Melbourne luncheons all sold out.

He will today be introduced by Australian academic Ian Plimer, who argues climate change politics is religious fundamentalism masquerading as science.

Professor Plimer also will present his view, followed by Professor Barry Brook, an international climate change research leader and director of the Research Institute for Climate Change and Sustainability at the University of Adelaide, and journalist Graham Readfearn, who regularly challenges climate change "deniers".

Lord Monckton is not the only person to identify flaws in the so called Global Warming Debate, now referred to as Climate change. The UN has now admitted that their 2007 report on global warming was not based on science and in their words contains, "Errors". Rudd, Wong and labor should stop wasting parliamentary time and taxpayers money on promoting a scheme and idea which is based on flawed science/errors and has been rejected by the vast majority of world leaders who attended the Copenhagen Junket. The nation would benefit more if Rudd and labor devoted valuable time and resources not to a lie, global warming, but to problems such as national debt/deficit, education, health, employment, IR, cost of living expenses, pensioner and indigenous health and welfare reform, and accountability in government. Rudd sees his flawed carbon tax policy as a means to an early election and best chance of winning a second term, whilst the national interest runs a poor second to his conceit and arrogance. There is little doubt that if Rudd is successful in his pursuit of the flawed Carbon Tax, ahead of the rest of the world, it will do irrepairable damage to our economy and industry.

Maybe if Mr Rudd and afew other polies kept their mouths shut there wouldn't be so much hot air about.

It seems that Plimer is citing evidence for high climate sensitivity on the same stage as Monckton is claiming low sensitivity and skeptics are claiming a victory and that both are right. Hmm.
