Tough conditions for competitors

05 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
TOUGH conditions greeted the competitors for the Dempster Sporting 1000 event on Sunday morning at Twilight Beach.

There was a strong onshore wind and a big sea running where the swimmers entered the water to commence the event. The swimmers found it tough going through the surf break getting out to the first marker buoy. Once around the buoy they headed to Twilight Beach where the sea was a little more pleasant and some managed to catch a wave in.

The board paddle was difficult with choppy seas and, with the strong onshore breeze, it took skill to keep the board on course. When they reached the final marker and headed to shore the power of the sea took over and most lost their boards on the way in. Some made it in clean - well done to those who did.

The run was the last leg and was the one which was least affected by the conditions. The number of Juniors who tackled these conditions with gusto was incredible. Congratulations to all competitors who participated in this event. The results are as follows: Individuals Juniors First and Fastest Rowan Brien, second Katie Beros. Seniors First and Fastest Shaun Beros, second Graeme Oversby, third Kathleen Donovan. Teams in order of Swimmer, Board Paddler and Runner, Juniors, First Jordyn Bradley, Ashley Morris, Jillian Saunders, second Sophie Drummond, Alison MacCarthur, Lucy Oorschot, Seniors First Greg Thomas, Wendy Liddle, Sharon Henning. Mixed Teams Juniors and Seniors, First Emily Davis, Cassandra Jose, Robyn Davis, second Libby Carter, Carole Morris, Lois Saunders, third Theo Oorschot, Sarah Oorschot, Sheila Oorschot.

This Sunday February 7 will be the 3km Esperance Freight Recherche swim starting at Fourth Beach and finishing at Twilight Beach. This event is open to all members of the public who would like to take up the challenge from Juniors through to Seniors. Registration for the event will be at 8.30am at the Surf Clubhouse at Twilight Beach, with the event starting at 9am. The entry fee is $22.00.

On the following weekend of February 13 and 14, a team of club members will be heading to Perth to take up the challenge of the Country State Championships on Saturday, and the Masters State Championships on Sunday. Both Championships will be held at City Beach.
