Soapbox is back

19 Feb, 2010 01:00 AM
SOAPBOX is back and started racing for the 2010 season with a meeting at the 10 Mile Wind Farm track on Sunday, January 31.

With a great turn out of three seniors and eleven juniors the racing was clean, all drivers holding their lines, placing some steady times. Sadly newcomer Matthew Coker broke his steering box in the fifth round and was unable to complete the day.

Sam Ashby placed some good times mixing it up with the group one juniors.

Ashlee Flynn-Dowell had some problems with her brakes sticking where as Harvey Bishop had breaks that were not working using the bushed in the pits to stop. Zac Kelman raced with his box a little damaged from his prang last season and did well to keep in the action.

Division placing for the day: Seniors; Danica VanDenBogart first, James Kelman second and Zac Kelman third.

Juniors: group one, first Terrence Flynn-Dowell, second Gaje Price, third Sam Ashby and fourth Ashley Blyth.

Group two: first Harvey Bishop, second Sam Ashby, third Nicholas Pascoe and fourth Ashlee Flynn-Dowell.

Group three: first Matt Dowsett, second Megan Kelman, third Matthew Coker.

On Sunday they were back on the field again which was a fun day for the kids and parents, each competitor had two timed individual runs down the hill allowing them to compare their racing times with each other.

Parents then got in on the action in the double soapbox racing against their child or children.

With dad Geoff chasing him down the hill Matt Dowsett improved his time by an outstanding eleven seconds. Harvey Bishop beat dad Paul down the hill by a 200th of a second, probably mum Tracey screaming all the way was enough to propel him forward.

Sam Ashby sped down the hill dad John had little chance of catching him. Brayden and Ashley Blyth ganged up on mum Sue, finishing three seconds behind them.

Colin and Angela took to the track with mum intending to take a video of young Matthew Coker but you need to keep your eyes open for that, Matthew improved his times by a massive 15 seconds on his run.

Terrence and Ashlee Flynn-Dowell were followed closely by dad Brendan who could only manage to catch Ashlee just. Sadly Nicholas Pascoe broke his steering box and was unable to race with his dad Gary, although Gary had a run by himself and posted an illegal time due to a little help at the top of the hill.

The club is gearing up for the 2010 South East Open Championships to be held at the Wind Farm Hill access round on Sunday, February 28.

Club members travel from Perth and Albany to compete on the day which starts at 9am.

The club members have been busy scouring the businesses of Esperance for sponsorship.

Spectators are welcome to come along.
