Open day well attended

04 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
THE annual Open Invitation Day at Scaddan Bowling Club was well attended on Sunday with bowlers coming from all over the district to complete for the Landmark prizes.

Everyone joined in the festive spirit of our annual fund raising day and a great time was had by all. Captain Ron Kendall was away, but thanks to Wally Vandenberghe, Alen Loffler and Frank Stone for organising a competitive day of mixed bowls.

The food was exemplary, prepared by Pat Curnow and her kitchen staff, and no one went away hungry after a terrific lunch topped off by ice cream and fruit salad. The Scaddan Bowling Club is blessed with good cooks and you should be ready to go to Scaddan when they supply food on special events.

Jessie Bauer was there early to put up the flag and help Charlie Kendall and Trish Stone prepare the grounds for the games.

Thanks to the Esperance Bowling Club for a larger contingent of bowlers who created a great atmosphere in the clubhouse, together with Norseman and Condingup players. There were too many to mention, but it was good to see regular Condingup players in Len and Di Chapman and the Muntz’s supporting our event once again.

Best of the ladies was Carol O’Callaghan from Norseman and the best of the men was local player John Maddock. Others to do well were Iris McCrea, Shirley Loffler, Marg Cahill and Di Chapman for the ladies; Charlie Kendall, Ian Carson, Alen Loffler and Ron Brown for the men.

Thursday men’s scroungers was won by Ron ‘Chicken man’ Brown and it is good to see him back bowling again. Geoff McLean was runner-up with equal points, but Ron won on count back. Peter Curnow played well in the first game to be equal with the guns, but did not play after the break. Glenn Lomax and Charlie Kendall were hard to beat. Visitors Graeme Menidue, Jack Woodhouse and John Newman from Esperance competed strongly but not well enough to beat Ron.

Next Sunday will be the A&J Bauer mixed singles knockout championship and names should be on the board by Thursday for players to compete for the perpetual trophy. Be there by 9am ready to start before 9.30am - it takes a while to get through this one day event. The following Sunday will be RSM Bird Cameron Day, which is a catered day favouring new players. So get a car organised and bring a new player for this popular event.
