NEWTOWN were at their best and Cascade saw their impressive winning streak which brought to an abrupt halt when the two sides faced off in their ECA Shield clash, played at Cascade on Saturday.
Cascade did have some excuses for their performance with Gary Walter called up to the Association side in Perth and both Vermeersch brothers missing from the side.
But missed opportunities played a major factor with Cascade dropping several crucial catches that could have well changed the course of the game which saw Newtown run away to a 73-run victory.
Undermanned, Cascade could manage just 131 runs despite some solid batting from their top order, which was highlighted by an unbeaten 31 from Cody Bingham.
Chasing over 200 runs Cascade looked solid early as openers Brody Wickstein and Matt Viviers added 48 runs for the first wicket.
Ten runs later Wickstein (24) while Bingham and Mark Walter (21) kept the side in the match.
But with some strong, accurate bowling from Newtown wickets began to fall, as Cascade folded with their final six batsmen dismissed for just 40 runs.
For Newtown an impressive six over stint saw Chris Perks top the bowling with 3/23, Scott McArthur 2/20 and Brenton Lance 2/27, handing in a great all round performance, also did well with the ball.
Earlier in the day Newtown batted with the side able to make the depleted Cascade pay for any errors on the field, eventually batting their way to 8/204.
Openers Geoff Harris (6) and Colin McArthur (9) never really had any impact on the game before Lister (45) got the scoreboard ticking over.
A middle order slump failed to sway the visitors as Lance (38), Paul Griffiths (12) and Chris O’Brien (not out 25) got Newtown into a strong position.
Adding insult to injury 20 wides and 19 no balls did little to enhance the Cascade efforts, conceding a massive 44 sundries.
Chris Bruhn topped the bowling with 2/33 while Kingston 2/31 also performed well, back in the side veteran Richard Wickstein also tasted success along with Mark Walter and Chris Ayres.
