LAST month (September 19 and 20) six riders from the Esperance Motocross Cub represented our town at the Australian ATV Nationals at Murray Bridge, South Australia.
The following riders represented Esperance and WA in the following classes: Pro-Open – Josh Higson and Clinton Mansell, Vets 35-44 age group – Brad Baldock, Vets 45 and over – Scott Higson, Intermediate Class – Aaron Parker and Scott Higson, 90cc (7-10years) class – Jack Baldock.
Over 180 ATV riders from all over the country met at Murray Bridge Motocross Circuit for this national event. Each class had a full grid and raced five races over the two-day weekend.
In the Pro-Open class it was fast and furious with the top 20 riders in the country competing for this National Number One title. With each race being 20 minutes, plus 1 lap, it was down to consistency, endurance by rider as well machine preparation to finish all races for the weekend.
John Higson had a fantastic weekend on board his Suzuki LTR450 four wheel motorbike, with great riding all weekend and was able to finish 3rd in the country in the Pro-Open class behind factory backed KTM rider Chris Benton and factory backed CAN_AM rider Chad McKay.
Clinton Mansell on board his KTM505 had a very mixed up weekend with a few mechanical problems but was able to finish a very respectful 14th position in the Pro-Open.
Brad Baldock raced his Polaris Outlaw 525 in the Vets 35-44 year age group and was able to gain some great positions over the weekend and was able to hold onto 4th place for his first National event.
Aaron Parker competed in the Intermediate Class with a full grid of talented riders. He had a very consistent ride all weekend and was able to finish 12th in his class.
Our youngest member, Jack Baldock rode his new Pro-Shark motorbike in the 90cc (7-10 years) class. Jack had a very mixed up two days, but did a fantastic job on his first official race meeting on his new bike. With lots of encouragement from family he finished an incredible 4th position in his class even after a DNF (Did not finish) in one of the races.
Veteran rider Scott Higson rode two classes over the weekend - the Intermediate Class and the Veterans 45 years and over. Racing was fierce in both of his classes – especially in the Vets. Scott managed to finish 10th in the Intermediate class, and although there was lots of tough competition he was able to hold down 4th position for the weekend.
The riders would like to thank John and Jared Mansell for being pit crew and washing their bikes for the weekend. Special thanks to family, friends and sponsors who made it possible for the riders to attend this National event.
The 2010 National ATV titles will be held in WA.
