Tate brothers on the attack

12 Feb, 2010 01:00 AM
COASTAL Warriors went on the offensive with brother Tyson and Robbie Tate helping set up a comfortable 80-run victory over Esperance in Saturdays Esperance Cricket Association Shield clash played at the Esperance Cricket Ground.

Batting first, Coastal Warriors faced a tough onslaught early as Esperance paceman Damien Keitel made short work of openers Craig Scott (6) and Dave Scheer (9).

Jaron Norwood (5) also struggled before Luke Ponting became the first batsman to reach double figures with 15 runs.

Quick wickets continued to plague the visitors before Tyson Tate and brother Robbie (29) came together with a 65-run partnership that had Coastal Warriors set for a competitive total.

Tyson Tate (60no) continued the for right through the innings while the Warriors tail order crumbled to some good bowling from Steve O’Reilly, the side eventually dismissed for 157 in the 39th over.

For Esperance the best bowling figures were returned by Keitel with 3/34 from his nine overs, Luke Grace came into the game strongly taking 3/21 off seven overs and O’Reilly claimed 3/27 towards the end of the innings, Ray Davis was also successful.

Needing 158 for the win Esperance were dealt a bitter blow early as veteran Trevor Blackburn had opener Davis removed without troubling the scorer, leaving the side 1/0.

Geoff Liefman (13) offered some resistance but the Warriors attack was quick to keep Esperance under pressure, which created havoc at the crease.

Quick wickets became the order of the day and, with the exception of the talented all rounder Marty Sullivan (17), the players were unable to reach double figures, Keitel (9) the closest.

After struggling to 4/20 early Esperance saw their innings close in the 25th over with just 77 runs on the board.

Geoff Harris topped the Warriors bowlers with 3/31 off nine overs while Tyson Tate capped off a great day with bat and ball taking 2/21 from eight overs, Blackburn and Callum Tate also tasted success.
