PREMIERSHIP favourites and minor premiers Ports had their grand final hopes dashed as Coastal Warriors took out the 2008-09 RAC Cup with an impressive 115-run victory at the Esperance Cricket Ground on Saturday.
Looking for their fourth straight RAC Cup and confident of an upset after a strong second semi-final victory, Coastal Warriors were solid right from the word go, winning the toss and electing to bat first.
Openers Brendon Tyrrell and Geoff Ponting started the innings with a solid half-century stand before Ponting (40) lost his wicket with the score on 54.
Tyrrell (23) followed 22 runs later but it was exciting all rounder Kyle Stone who took control of the scoreboard, figuring in an 82-run stand with brother Leon (29) while bringing up a half century with the bat.
Keeper Wade Montgomerie (4) fell cheaply and Kyle Stone (91) eventually fell with the score on 202 while Brendan Weckert (12) and Jordan Whiting (12) helped Coastal Warriors to 7/216.
For Ports, Ken Hayes bowled well taking 2/39 from seven overs while Steve Baker claimed 2/33 off four overs. Nigel Johnston and Shane Tobin were also successful with a wicket each.
In reply Ports found themselves in early trouble as Steve Hill (9) and Lyndon Mickel (0) returned to the batting pavilion with just 17 runs on the scoreboard.
Shane Tobin (4) struggled for his usual solid batting and when Baker (10) and Simon Norseworthy (4) were removed the Blues were in trouble at 5/29.
Hayes (0) fell just two runs later before Brett Keevil (38) and Todd McElroy (11) tried to lift the side.
Gary MacDonald (16) also rose to the occasion while Steve Reid (6) showed fight, but it was just a matter of time and Ports eventually crumbled to be all out for 102.
Geoff Peal ended the day with bowling honours, having claimed 4/13, Brendan Weckert and brother Ashley ended the game with 2/21 and 2/13 respectively while Adam Raynor and Ponting also tasted success.
