ESPERANCE Volunteer Fire and Rescue senior competition coach Brian Willoughby has condemned the senseless vandalism on the fire brigade’s running tower, an act which was discovered Tuesday morning.
Vandals have caused in excess of $1,500 in structure damage to the tower, which was found toppled on its side at the Brian Willoughby running track at Esperance Oval.
“That structure has had to be rebuilt twice now, thanks to this repeated act,” he said. “It just breaks your heart.”
“We had the same incident occur six months ago. We are a volunteer organisation and put hours of our time into helping this town, and this is useless, senseless damage.
“Now we have to put our efforts into repairing the damage instead of training.”
The fire brigade running tower is used to train people to run up ladders to the tops of buildings, a means of training future fire fighters how to fight fires on second storey buildings.
“Standing over six metres in height, it would have taken three or four well built people with considerable strength to push that over,” he said.
Mr Willoughby said the next step would have to be a full repair and check of the entire structure to ensure it was sound enough to be used at the upcoming Goldfields Zone Picnic competition on February 5.
