A LOCAL man suffered a very unpleasant start to the holiday season when his vintage 1966 HR Holden was severely damaged by vandals on the day before Christmas.
Nulsen resident Greg Gregory woke up on Monday morning to find that several obscene words and pictures had been carved into the paintwork of his car.
The culprits, along with damaging another car on the premises – a 2006 Ford Courier - also defaced Mr Gregory’s car by burning an unknown object on top of the boot.
Mr Gregory said he believed the vandals were probably motivated by jealousy.
“We came in to some money several months ago so it’s probably a revenge or jealousy thing.
“It completely ruined Christmas for me.
“My extended family has come down from Boulder to spend Christmas with me and their car has been damaged as well … this sort of thing isn’t a good reflection on Esperance at all.”
Mr Gregory said he finished his shift working for Esperance Taxi Service at around 2.30am on Monday morning and be believed the vandals had struck some time between 3am and 5am.
“The HR itself is worth $23,000 and with the damage, it’s going to put me back $10,000 to get the paintwork replaced to the standard it was before the vandalism,” he said.
“I don’t know how much it will cost to repair the Ford Courier but regardless it’s going to be a costly exercise.”
Esperance police Senior Constable Jeremy Ashworth said that forensically trained officers had visited the scene to take fingerprints and examine the damage.
He also confirmed that no other vandalism had been reported in the area.
Mr Gregory is offering a $1000 reward to anyone who supplies Esperance police with information regarding the vandalism that leads to a conviction.
