THE flash of cameras lit up the early morning darkness, people scrambled for the best spot to observe the rising sun and an overall sense of awe was present among the 45 people in attendance at Stonehenge Esperance on Thursday, December 22, as the sun rose on the longest day in the southern hemisphere.
The annual summer solstice was marked for the first time at Stonehenge Esperance with a unique event that replica co-owner and builder Kim Beale recollects as being “a pretty special morning.”
“Jillian and I had been checking for a few days to make sure things were all right - particularly to ensure we did not have to do any movement on the two gateway stones.”
With the not inconsiderable crowd in attendance for the 4.38am sunrise, both Kim and Jillian said they were pleased with the response on their farming property, 15km east of the town.
“Considering we didn’t really advertise the event - we wanted a small run on the first one to see how we’d handle the event - we were very happy with how it turned out,” Mr Beale said.
