Sign breaks down 'blokey' stigma

03 Feb, 2012 01:00 AM
AS part of a drive to prevent suicide in Esperance Dr Graham Jacobs MLA unveiled a 1Life suicide prevention sign on Friday at the Esperance football oval.

1Life Community Coordinator Natalia Scott said the aim of the signs was to encourage people to think about how they are feeling.

“What we hope to achieve is to provide people, in particular men, with contact numbers if they feel the need for support,” she said.

“One of the goals of 1Life is to encourage self-help seeking behaviour and to increase early interventions so that people seek help before they try to take their own life, and even pass on the information to their mates if they are concerned about their well-being.”

1Life is also keen to de-stigmatise suicide in the community and hopes that having prominent signs around town will make people more likely to talk about it.
