Odd job challenges

07 Apr, 2009 05:00 AM
TRAFFIC literally came to a standstill on Esperance’s main street last Friday, as cars slowed down out of curiosity to watch three scantily clad people scrub the roundabout at the intersection of Andrew Street and The Esplanade.

The three friends, Anne Race, Phil Carr and Gareth Owen, make up the As Cheeky As You Can’t fundraising team, currently travelling Australia to raise funds for Book Aid International.

To raise funds, the teams have been accepting odd jobs in the towns they have visited, however they quickly agreed that Esperance people had some of the oddest jobs on offer.

“We met up with the APEX club in Perth, and they put us in touch with the APEX club in Esperance, who gave us an itinerary when we arrived in town,” Mr Carr said.

“The itinerary included attending an APEX dinner, where they unveiled three challenges for us to complete, for $250 each challenge.”

While initially the challenges seemed simple – washing cars at Bay Automotive, cleaning the roundabout, or giving the top of Frenchmans Peak a clean – there was a catch, the trio had to complete the challenges in swimwear.

“We had to clean a roundabout in the middle of the day in budgie smugglers,” Mr Carr said.

“We got a few wolf-whistles and things, but everyone has been smiling as they drive past so at least we’ve been entertaining.

“This is the first time we have come to a town and people have already put some jobs together for us, and they were quite inventive.”

Mr Carr said the team had also signed on to help the Esperance Bay Rotary Club serve breakfast at the Relay For Life over the weekend, earning another $250.

“We have been really well looked after in Esperance, and we’ve managed to raise over $1000.

“The team at Bay Automotive have also put together a package to help us get across the Nullarbor, and a few people have helped us out with petrol too.”

As Cheeky As You Can’t are set to leave Esperance and head east today. Those interested in finding out more or keeping up to date with the teams adventures can visit their website, ascheekyasyoucant.blogspot.com.
