Man dies after near-drowning

21 Nov, 2011 01:33 PM
A PERTH man has died following a near-drowning at Twilight Beach on Friday afternoon.

A spokesperson from Police Media told the Esperance Express that the 72-year-old man died on Sunday.

Despite its regard as the safest swimming and surfing beach in town, Twilight Beach was the scene of the second near-drowning in three weeks, after the man was knocked off his boogie board on Friday.

The man was swimming with his wife when he was hit by a wave at around 2pm.

St John Ambulance community paramedic Paul Gaughan arrived on the scene just following 2pm and said the man did not surface after being pulled underwater by the wave.

“The man had been dragged from the surf pulseless by his wife and a tourist,” he said, “so we began CPR straight away.
